David (Doctor David D. Meisel, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Computational Astrophysics) met Vladimir Sidorov at the Globemet meeting in Dushanbe, Tadjikistan in 1987 and began research collaborations that eventually brought Vlad to the US in the summer of 1997. Vlad stayed with us in our home in Geneseo, NY.

I told Vlad all about Rotary and asked if he would like to start a club in Kazan. I had been President of the Geneseo Rotary Çlub and knew Rotary International wanted to have clubs in Russia. They were having a conference in Moscow, the Rotary International Peace Conference in St. Petersburg October 2-5, 1997 and I asked Vlad and Delara to come as my guest. I would come too. Vlad left my home enthusiastic and ready to start a club in Kazan. One small misunderstanding. Vlad thought Rotary was for WOMEN. Surprise.

Natasha DiKareva, a member of Novgorod Rotary, my roommate in St. Petersburg then Russian hostess from Novgorod, (and finally my sister-in-law), helped me make arrangements for the Kazan visit. I came across a letter in which she has helped get paperwork done for Vlad, Dilara, Ludmila Bikmullina, Ludmila Govorova, Caida Amirhanova, Naila Lihaeheva, Farida Shaukatovna Akulova. These same names were in the official Rotary book at the Conference. Did all these people attend? I am sorry but with all the excitement I only remember Vlad and Delara.

I met Vlad and Delara in St. Petersburg. They both came ready to find a host club within Russia (a requirement). Geneseo would be a sponsor , especially for money for startup and dues. Vlad wanted a Russian AND a Turkish sponsor and he was successful with both. He found me and took me to a meeting with the St. Petersburg-Neva club that had agreed to sponsor Kazan. They were the sponsor club for this international meeting and were gracious to us all.

The Rochester, New York area had 12 people at the Peace Conference. Some were sponsoring the club in Novgorod and some for a club in Staraya Russa. We were a week in Novgorod and visited Staraya Russa. It is my understanding that of the three clubs that we were helping, only Kazan Rotary still exists. Hip Hip Hooray for Kazan!!!!

The president of the St. Petersburg-Neva club, Arseni Berezin, explained his club would be the Papa club and the Geneseo club would be the Mama and Kazan would be our baby. He then kissed my hand and we took pictures and that was that.

Next Vlad took me to meet the Turkish Besiktas Rotary Club from Istanbul who had agreed to sponsor Kazan as well. Attorney Dogan Fikret Aykan asked what had happened when we joined with the St. Petersburg club. I told him. He kissed my hand and we took pictures, I think--I have no pictures of that group, and that was that.

I have no idea what these clubs did for Kazan. They had to sign to the satisfaction of Rotary International but the rest had to be done by Kazan. Geneseo Rotary did send money to Rotary International on behalf of Kazan Rotary on more than one occasion. The rest was done by the members of Kazan Rotary with great success. I am very proud of the small part I played. The great work was done by the members of this Kazan Rotary and its founder, Vladimir Sidorov.

I found an email message telling me that in April 1998, Jorma Lapen of Rotary International and from Finland met in Vladimir with Vlad and Dilara at a PETS conference and went over final plans for chartering Kazan.

When it came time to Charter the Kazan Rotary (after you had completed all the requirements of Rotary International), Vlad asked if I would come for the chartering ceremony on June 4, 1999 and I said yes. My nephew, Jeffrey Conrad, was in the Peace Corp in Vladimir and had married a Russian from that city. I invited them to join me in a trip to Kazan as a wedding gift if they would be my translators. They agreed.

Jeffrey met me in Moscow, gave me a quick tour of that city and then took me to Vladimir to meet his wife’s family and a tour of that city. Jeffrey took care of my train ticket and was able to get Russian rates, a great savings for me. He and Ira were always nearby when I needed help with translations, with bus rides, with finding a taxi (just stop the next car, agree on the cost, and get in the car)--very unlike here in Geneseo!!!

We were housed in a college dormitory with everything we could possibly need. We were royally entertained--all the normal tour sites plus fishing on the Volga using hook, string and maggots, and the radar site used for Vlad’s work with David. and a big party at Vlad’s dacha. I helped Vlad prepare papers for the ceremony. It was Puskin’s year and his picture was prominent in the ceremony room so I covered it with the Kazan Banner and said it was Kazan’s day. I hope I didn’t offend too many people.

Geneseo Rotary prepared the Kazan flags and banner and a Rotary club in Texas provided the club bell which the Geneseo club had engraved. I brought them all in my suitcase. Jorma Lapen of Rotary International and from Finland (remember him?) The tall redhead in pictures is Jeffrey, my nephew. Ira, his wife is in the pictures too as she was translating. I am sorry I do not remember all the names of the Kazan members. Faces look familiar but the names do not come.

We last saw Vlad in Canada at the Meteoroids 2004 meeting at London Ontario. Meteoroids is an International Meeting that essentially was an out growth of the Globmet meetings held in Russia. (Pictures)

Я встретила Влада и Диляру в Санкт-Петербурге. Они оба прибыли готовые найти родительский клуб из России. Дженезео был бы спонсором, специально для денег для запуска и взносов. Влад захотел российского и турецкого спонсора. Он нашел меня и взял меня на встречу с клубом Санкт-Петербург-Нева, который согласился спонсировать Казань. Они были спонсорским клубом этой международной встречи и были любезны со всеми нами... Казанский клуб до сих пор существует. Ура Казани!!!!
Президент клуба Санкт-Петербург-Нева, Арсений Березин, объяснил, что его клуб будет клубом Папы, и клуб Дженезео был бы Мамой, и Казань будет нашим ребенком. Затем он поцеловал мою руку, и мы сделали фото.
Затем Влад взял меня на встречу турецкого Ротари-клуба Besiktas из Стамбула, который также согласился спонсировать Казань. Поверенный Догэн Фикрет Эйкэн спросил, что произошло, когда мы присоединились к санкт-петербургскому клубу. Я рассказала ему.
Ротари клуб Дженесео действительно посылала деньги в Rotary International от имени Казанской Ротации больше чем в одном случае. Остальное было сделано членами Казанского Ротари с большим успехом. Я очень горжусь той незначительной ролью, которую я играла. Большая работа была сделана членами этой Казанского Ротари и ее основателем, Владимиром Сидоровым.

И большая вечеринка на даче Влада. Я помогла Владу подготовить бумаги к церемонии. Это был год Пушкина, и его портрет висел в комнате, где проходила церемония, таким образом, я покрыла его Баннером Казани и говорила, что это был день Казани. Я надеюсь, что не оскорбила этим слишком много людей.
Ротари Дженесео приготовил Казанские флаги и баннер, и Ротари-клуб из Техаса обеспечил клубный звонок, который выгравировал клуб Дженесео. Всё это я привезла в своём чемодане.
